On my way to work this morning I thought about a few places I want/need to visit before the year is up and i came up with this little map:

1. Maine
I’ve only had lobster a hand full of times in my life. It started two years ago with surf and turf in up state new york and since then i’ve been on a mission to eat the best possible lobster i can. I feel like maine is the only place i can make this happen.
2. Portland
It seems like portland is getting cooler and cooler by the day. So many people i know have been or are going or have said amazing things about the city. I’m curious. The only problem is I don’t know anyone there. I should find befriend some folks on flickr. If anyone wants to go, holler at me.
3. Houston, TX
Little Cuz and best from back in the day live here. I need to see them asap (by asap i mean as soon as it isn’t hot)
4. The OC
My boy spence is moving out there this week and I think a trip to cali with blazey could be fun.
Thats all for this year I think.

Dude. Come to Portland… I’m here.
Yeah Portland man, come hang out! 360-521-3566
oh word! so what are somethings to do in portland?
I vote H-town first!! tons of stuff to do.
(p.s. you don’t have to wait until it’s not hot…everyone has central a/c and you’ll spend a lot of time either inside bldgs or cars…won’t really spend much time outdoors anyway. go have fun!)
Make sure you have some Frenchy’s - I promise it puts Crown’s to shame…
I vote Portland because it is on my list of places I would like to go since moving to the West side (supposed to be fun and beautiful). So, make that happen and report back. Please and thanks.
Oh and, of course, OC because that is in my backyard.
Yeah, Houston in August is totally miserable.
My rec’s (I’m from Houston):
Get some seafood in Galveston (Gaido’s is good, so is Casey’s); I would also suggest (__highly__) The Mosquito Cafe; one of the best restaurants in Galveston. The squash cake. Man. Making me hungry.
Houston has really awesome photography; try MFA and the Houston Center for Photography. Fotofest was earlier this year, but there’s a showing in early September and one in November (Talent in Texas). There’s also some great galleries. In Dallas Photographs Do Not Bend is really cool.
Oh, and you should try to make it to Austin. Eat some BBQ at Iron Works by the convention center, and some pizza at Homeslice. Go over by the University and skip 6th, unless you like getting accosted by schizophrenic drug dealers. Maybe you do.
Just don’t come in August. Too humid. Too hot.
For whatever delightful reason, Lobster is decadent and champagne is cheap in Portland.
There’s a totally touristy, but oh-so-worth it boat restaurant off one of the docks in Portland. Lazy lobster (pre-extracated from the exo-skeleton and buttered the hell down) is perfect and Dom is like 65 bucks a bottle. Can’t be missed. Sea lions even dot the horizon.
yay houston!
it will start cooling down around october. and frenchy’s really is amazing. but there are tons of other great restaurants - we are the country’s fattest city for a reason.
i used to live in NYC and miss the food back home. now i live in houston and miss….well…everything about NYC. but esp. the food.
(btw. hi. i’m kim.)
For the love of god, don’t refer to my home county as “the oc.” It’s like saying “LA,” you refer to it as “OC.”
As long as one of your first trips in 09 is New Orleans with your big sis, you can go wherever. But I want to go to Maine with you! I had the biggest Alaskan King Crab Legs last nite as I viewed the Pacific…ahhhhhhh, it gets no better! How great would it be to get lobster in Maine??!!
Ha, Liz totally just checked you. If you don’t know, now you know. Get ‘em, girl.
liz.. what’s odd about that is the way los angelenos insist on putting a “the” in front of freeways, which baffles me.. “take THE 10 to THE 405″
that’s just weird. it’s take 75 north. or take 95 south. no “the” necessary
My bad Liz! Next time i mention the OC i’ll be sure to remove ‘the’.
Oh man I’ve been trying to checkout Maine for a minute.
Hey Brandon, remember me? Yes, I still read your blog!. I live in Portland, Oregon. If you come out here, email me and show you around!
-Eric
yo eric! i was just talking about you with silvia. she was telling me about the last time you were in chicago with her
I was in Portland, Maine this past weekend. The lobster is official and there is a suprisingly good nite life. Best of all the drinks are cheap.
If you don’t remember, I met you last summer thru Mari when I was an intern a Nolej.
