Earlier this evening I was stressing out looking for an atm. None of them work with US cards except citi bank and i think one other.
It started when I attempted to get home from a long day of walking around. i was stuck somewhere quite a bit away from my hotel and i didn’t have any money left on my metro card. I was at one of the largest stations and it was taking all of what was left of the little energy i had. By this time i don’t think i had anything to eat except some chocolate which you’ll see later. (I know, i know, mom, ebony, marcia, blazey, jillian and everyone one else who gets on me about not eating when i should, you don’t have to tell me.)
once i found the information counter I asked about putting the 180 yen i have left in cash on my card or using my credit card. Neither would work. It took a minimum of 1000 yen (kinda like 10 bucks). 3 flights and 150 meter walk later i’m at an atm that won’t take my card. great. i’m stuck in a post rush hour downtown and no convenience stores or other banks in sight. After walking a few blocks I hail a cab that takes visa.

This is for my fellow appreciators of good wayfinding/signage systems.
Anything to do with exiting the metro is in yellow/black type. It is so easy to follow you just have to pay attention. I’m sure even if i didn’t use the NYC transit it wouldn’t take me that long to figure it out.
The best part of this system is that they name each exit with an alphanumeric character. So if there are four exits it will have A1 - A4 along with a map of the streets above. So much easier than saying southwest or northeast exit.
How beautiful is the typography? Does anyone know who did this?
*update: so i was leaving JFK and noticed their exit signs were similar (yellow and black) I guess i never noticed them because i never really needed visual cues other than the words.

This is my Tokyo ambasador.
She was surprised at how well i got around by myself. She mentioned that her boyfriend, who is also from nyc, was here last week (and once or twice before) and can be intimidated by going out on his own.
Her permed hair was one of 4 that i saw my entire time here. Apparently anything that isn’t straight isn’t looked at so highly at the offices or liked by many Japaneses men. I don’t know about them but i’m all about short or really curly hair.

The retail experience in Tokyo. I heard it was like no other and now I can really say i’ve seen some of the best, most incredible stores in the world.
This is a guide book from a hip, urban streetwear website called superfuture. I downloaded it and printed it out just before i left. It breaks each neighborhood down and lets you know the best places to visit. And i visited almost every cool shop that they listed and then some. Today i thought my legs were going to fall off.
A few things I can say now are:
- Pharrell and Kanye only dress better than me ’cause they knew about Tokyo. oh, and their endless bank account ballances of course
- If you call yourself a fashionista and haven’t been to Tokyo then you don’t know jack about fashion.
- women and men of tokyo dress better than you nomatter how fly you think you are or how different you think your style is. the’ve been there and done that and looked better doing it.
- if you want to be inspired for retail store design come here
- the bathing ape store really is that fresh
Thank you superfuture for guiding me through the streets of Tokyo. I can’t wait to do it again.

I wanted to make sure my last few nights in Tokyo were comfortable. I found this place via superfuter’s guide book (i’ll tell you about it later).
It is new boutique hotel about a block or two away from the main crossing in Shibuya.

Right now it is about 9 am on my last full day in Japan. There is still so much to say and show you. I wish I could live blog every moment. I’m doing my best to buy something for everyone but i’m quickly realziing i have not nearly enough money to do so. I think i spent everything and still haven’t bought myself anything. can you believe it? Okay, maybe a small watch or two.
What I think i’ll do is set up everything I’ve picked up and having a little gathering sometime next week at the crib and if you come you can have something or at least see all the cool and interesting things. Of course i’ll photograph everything.

1) it ain’t as bad as it looks.
2) i did it for the people.
3) never again.
4) they literally kick you out the hotel at 10am. you can’t come back till 5pm even if you are staying a few nights.
5) no private showers
How it works after the jump:
